KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 2): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the MCA should close down as the party has clearly been rejected by the people.

"I think they better close shop," he said in an interview with Sin Chew Daily published today. "Just like how Umno was destroyed by two former prime ministers, MCA was also destroyed."

"Because MCA in its early days represented not only the big businessmen, they were also accepted by the majority of the Chinese community.

"But now, the Chinese businessmen and non-businessmen have all rejected MCA, because they (MCA) only think [about] themselves," he added.

Dr Mahathir said MCA today is equivalent to an entity that does not exist after being rejected by the Chinese community, as it does not represent anybody.

Noting that the party is now left with a single member of parliament, the prime minister said: "Just one person, he cannot represent anybody. He can express his view as he likes, but if people want to believe MCA's view on the current situation, I think these people are wasting their time."

On MCA's claim that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) has become the dominant party in Pakatan Harapan, Dr Mahathir said: "That is MCA's view, MCA doesn't exist".

Dr Mahathir, who is PPBM chairman, said PH is a coalition formed by four parties, with none of the parties dominating.

To implement its policies, PH needs to obtain majority support from its coalition members, he added. — theedgemarkets.com
