PJ City Council promises action on one-way loop congestion

PETALING JAYA (Jan 27): Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has promised to take action to solve traffic congestion woes on the Petaling Jaya One Way Loop (OWL) system.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain said that the main reason for the congestion was because of the equipment left behind on the roads by contractors.

“We have two big projects: Indah Water Konsortium and OWL. For example, when they do their work in front of the MBPJ office they will close part of the road for their machines, causing disruptions,” Azizi said at a press conference after a full board meeting at MBPJ Headquarters today.

“When we have a meeting with the contractors we inform them that, after finishing their work, they have to move all their machinery, tools and equipment, so that people can pass.

“We have issued five stop work orders already this year, with the latest on Jalan Othman, because they didn’t follow our instructions,” he said.

Azizi also said roads affected by the loop would be resurfaced again to make sure that roads in Petaling Jaya were in prime condition.

“Certain parts of the road according to the project timeline are supposed to be re-tarred after project completion, but because of complaints, we patch up certain parts of the road first.

“This project is supposed to be completed by the end of August, but there might be a delay of one week. The contractor was actually told to hurry up, this morning,” he said.

Azizi also said MBPJ would be looking at improving the traffic citywide.

“We have added 12 new buses for our PJ City Bus service, with two new routes (PJ03 and PJ04) starting Jan 18,” he said, adding that RM6.5 million had been budgeted for the free bus service.

“We also have 6.30am to 7.30am free services, picking up school children and taking them to school for free from stations,” he said. -- The Malaysian Insider
