GEORGE TOWN (Nov 25): The Penang government is seeking clarification from the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government on its plan to increase the prices of low cost (LC) and low-medium cost (LMC) homes.

State housing exco Jagdeep Singh Deo (pictured) said it was proposed that the prices be raised to RM65,000 for an LC unit and RM100,000 for an LMC unit during a meeting at the National Housing Council in August.

He said there was no reason given for the proposal.

"We ask for clarification on this matter and how it will be implemented in the various states," he said at a press conference yesterday, where he informed reporters that a letter had been sent to minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

In Penang, LC and LMC homes were priced at RM42,000 and RM72,500, respectively, Jagdeep said, and a price hike would adversely affect the low-income group.

He said applicants for such units were already having trouble getting housing loans at current prices.

"The states should be consulted if the government plans to increase the prices of these units.

"Our views should be sought before any decision is made," he said, adding that he was prepared to meet the minister to talk about the issue. -- The Malaysian Insider
