SEREMBAN (Dec 3): The Negeri Sembilan government is focusing Port Dickson as the pulse of the state’s tourism, viewing the seaside town as a short weekend holiday spot, especially for people from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
“By making Port Dickson a home base, most of the tourism programmes will start here and be networked (linked) to tourism products in other districts.
“For year 2014, more than 5.5 million tourists visited Port Dickson, of which roughly 4.2 million were local and 1.4 million were from overseas,” was the state government’s written reply to a written question from assemblyman M Ravi (PKR-Port Dickson) during the assembly sitting on Tuesday.
Ravi had asked what the Negeri Sembilan’s long term plan was to maintain Port Dickson as a national beach attraction, while enquiring about recent tourist figures.
He also asked how much income the tourism contributed to the state government.
“Income from tourism is not recorded by states because it comprises retail, food and beverage, transport and others under the service sector, which also involves other parties apart from tourists.
“Generally, the state received RM15.5 million in income, with 43% contributed under service sector to 2014 Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” read the reply. - The Malaysian Insider
