ALOR SETAR: The Regency Jerai Hill Resort, set atop Gunung Jerai, will see the addition of a number of new facilities including a chalet for the Sultan of Kedah and an open restaurant following a RM2.5 million
allocation by the federal government.
The branch manager of The Regency Hotel & Resort, Ibrahim Ishak said apart from this, a swimming pool as well as children's playground will also be built to attract more visitors to come and stay at the facility owned by the Kedah State Development Corporation (PKNK).
The resort is sited about 1,250 metres above sea level with temperatures of between 19 to 24 degrees celsius.
"The allocation will also be used to build a botanical park and plant a collection of 300 wild orchids as well as cactus throughout the two-hectare resort," he told Bernama.
Planting of the orchid collection began six months ago with the cooperation of an entrepreneur from Penang.
"All the projects are expected to be completed this year," he said.
Ibrahim also said there were plans to plant strawberry plants again at the hill resort as was the case in the past. "If successful, it will be an added attraction for visitors to the resort," he highlighted.
The resort has been renovated after being closed for almost three years from 2006 and has 75 rooms, of which 25 were recently added. More than RM20 million has been allocated to renovate and improve the status of The Regency Jerai Hill Resort since 2006.
It reopened operations on Sept 22, 2009 and room rates are between RM180 and RM500 per night.
The resort, based on the concept of a hill resort within a park, also has other facilities such a banquet hall to seat 300 and a surau for 120 persons at any one time.
Due to its relative proximity to other attractions and an excellent view, it can become a major draw.
According to Ibrahim, the resort management has also made available activities such as jungle trekking, paintball and mountain climbing..-- Bernama
