KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): It is now mandatory for all government projects costing RM10 million and more, and private sector ventures of RM50 million and above, to hit an Industrialised Building System (IBS) score of 70, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pictured).
Najib said by making use of IBS components produced in controlled environments, conformity with stringent quality assurance requirements can be maintained, Bernama reported today.
"The IBS is an ideal building system that will promote environmental sustainability, resulting in less wastage of materials, compared to conventional construction methods.
"It is also the construction method of choice in enhancing worker safety and working conditions by reducing accidents and fatalities at work sites," Najib said at the launch of the International Construction Week 2016 here today.
Najib's speech was read by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
With IBS being used in the construction industry, the number of unskilled workers in the country can also be reduced and focus can be placed on pre-fabricated and modular construction, Najib added.
"The move will encourage more locals to join the construction industry as skilled workers, IBS components installer and machine operators.
"I believe the IBS is the future of the construction industry. It is timely that the industry embraces it whole-heartedly for us to make the quantum leap towards attaining developed nation status by 2020," Najib added.
