KUALA LUMPUR (April 28): Continental will shutter its tyre plant in Alor Setar, Kedah, by the end of 2025, ending 46 years of operations. The plant has 950 employees.
In a statement on Monday, the company said the plant makes tyres for passenger cars, light trucks and motorcycles. Tyres for passenger cars and light trucks are specifically for the Asia-Pacific market.
The tyre plant in Alor Setar commenced operations on Dec 20, 1979, and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Continental since May 2012. The manufacturing facility covers an area of about 133,000 square metres.
The move will see Continental, which serves replacement customers and original equipment customers alike, left with one manufacturing facility in Petaling Jaya. This facility, which currently employs around 500 staff, produces off-the-road tyres for material handling and agricultural use.
Beyond Malaysia, Continential has manufacturing facilities in Hefei (China), Rayong (Thailand), Modipuram (India) and Kalutara (Sri Lanka).
Continental’s decision to close the Alor Setar tyre plant follows a full business review, as it bids to stay competitive in the Asia-Pacific region. The move is part of efforts to adjust to changing customer demand and improve its product range and factory locations.
Continental says Malaysia remains an important market and it remains committed to its customers and partners in the country.
