• ISR 2030 outlines 12 strategic pillars driving IOI Properties' initiatives to address climate change, biodiversity, waste management, sustainable finance, supply chain management, employee well-being, and sustainability risks and opportunities.

PUTRAJAYA (Nov 14): IOI Properties Group Bhd (KL:IOIPG) has launched its IOI Sustain Roadmap 2030 (ISR 2030) to drive sustainable progress across all facets of the group's operations.

At a launch event at IOI City Mall on Thursday, ISR 2030 outlines 12 strategic pillars driving IOI Properties' initiatives to address climate change, biodiversity, waste management, sustainable finance, supply chain management, employee well-being, and sustainability risks and opportunities.

It focuses on strategic initiatives to address climate change, biodiversity, waste management, sustainable finance, supply chain management, employee well-being and sustainability risks and opportunities.

In his welcome address, IOI Properties chief operating officer (property development) Malaysia Teh Chin Guan says, "As a responsible and ethical business, we have formulated the ISR 2030 as a comprehensive sustainability blueprint designed to guide us in our quest to effectively manage the associated risks and leverage opportunities for a more resilient future."

He added that the group is looking forward to collaborating with various stakeholders on ISR 2030.

The guest of honour was Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. In his keynote address, he said there is an increasing expectation by stakeholders on the need to address sustainability issues, particularly on climate change.

"I am happy to see the private and corporate sector actively taking steps in addressing such issues. Collectively, we can achieve milestones for the nation and for Earth. Hence, we look forward to more collaborative public-private initiatives to address climate change, biodiversity as well as overall sustainability challenges," he said.

He also announced that the ministry has commissioned a study to draft the National Climate Change Bill, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament by the first quarter of 2025.

Launch of Malaysia's largest mall rooftop solar photovoltaic system

At the same event, IOI Properties also unveiled the latest rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at IOI City Mall.

In partnership with TERA VA Sdn Bhd, the 4MWp solar PV system was commissioned in October 2024 for Phase 2 of IOI City Mall and it is expected to generate an estimated annual electricity generation of 5,355 MWh and avoid 4,059.34 tCO2 annually.

Together with the system commissioned in July 2021 for Phase 1 of the mall, the total peak capacity is expected to be 7.569 MWp. The estimated annual electricity generation is 9,785 MWh, with an expected carbon emissions avoidance of 7,661 tCO2 annually.

In his opening address, IOI Properties chief operating officer (property investment) Chris Chong said the newly energised solar PV system complements the mall’s existing 3.5 MWp system with 3,358 tCO2 emissions avoidance per year.

“As the largest mall in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, we recognise our responsibility lies far beyond providing a lifestyle experience. We continue to advocate the conservation of our environment for a sustainable future,” said Chong, adding that this initiative is fully in line with the strategies laid out in ISR 2030.

The solar PV system is also installed at other developments such as Palm Garden Golf Club and IOI Mall Puchong. Those in the pipeline include IOI Sales Galleria in Bandar Puteri Puchong and Bangi as well as IOI Resort City.

"This initiative of utilising renewable energy and partnering with experts like TERA VA will help us to lower our carbon emissions and is a part of our decarbonisation plan towards net zero. Investing in solar panels enables us to minimise transmission risks that may arise from carbon pricing in the future," said Chong.

After the launch event, there was a panel discussion entitled 'Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Developments', which featured experts such as Malaysian Green Building Council president Serina Hijjas, World Wildlife Fund Malaysia senior director of conservation Henry Chan, TERA VA managing director Michael Leong and United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei head of programmes Shanta Helena Dwarkasing.

The panel, moderated by IOI Properties head of group corporate sustainability Kristine Ng, discussed strategies and efforts to ensure a sustainable urban built environment.
