GEORGE TOWN (July 2): Marriott International Inc and Ideal Property Group will team up to open the second 'Marriott' brand hotel and residences in Penang by 2029, namely, the Penang Marriott Hotel Queens Waterfront and Marriott Residences Queens Waterfront in Bayan Lepas.

Following a signing ceremony today, Ideal Property Group would be the developer while Marriott International would be the operator.

The first 'Marriott' brand to open its doors in the island was the Penang Marriott Hotel which opened in April, while the Penang Marriott Executive Apartments would be opened later this year.

In his speech, Ideal Property Group chairman Tan Sri Alex Ooi Kee Liang said the collaboration aimed to establish a landmark development in Penang, subsequently enhancing the state's reputation as a premier destination.

He added that the Penang Marriott Hotel Queens Waterfront and Marriott Residences Queens Waterfront are part of Phase 4 in the Queens Waterfront master plan.

"Slated to open in 2029, the 28-storey hotel offers 262 luxurious hotel rooms complete with top tier amenities while the 19-storey branded residences provide 228 residential units with exclusive facilities and premium amenities, including sophisticated recreational areas and wellness spaces, ensuring a lifestyle of comfort, convenience and luxury.

“Both the hotel and branded residences offer a serene living experience and prime seafront views with the Penang bridge and Penang second bridge as backdrops. Adjacent to Queensbay Mall, residents and guests enjoy easy access to Penang's largest shopping centre," he said at the signing ceremony here today.

On behalf of Ideal Property Group, the agreements were signed by Ooi and executive director Puan Sri Joanne Phor Li Wei, while Marriott International was represented by its Hotel Development, Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) senior director Andree Susilo and Mixed-Use Development, Asia Pacific excluding China, vice-president Penny Trinh.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was witnessing the signing ceremony, said the project represents a significant investment in Penang and it aligns with the state government's vision for a holistic and inclusive growth.

He added that by providing top-tier hospitality and residential options, it would concurrently create high impact jobs for local employment.

“In this regard, this project will require 100 to 200 jobs in the field of engineering, architecture and project management.

“Meanwhile, tourism in the state is expected to witness a spike, with the ‘Marriott’ brand capable of anchoring high spending tourists to Penang. Hence, this will translate to an approximate annual RM33.5 million contribution to the state’s economy," Chow said.

The hotel is anticipated to be the company’s seventh Marriott Hotel brand in Malaysia following Penang Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel, Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel, Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa, Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa, and Miri Marriott Resort and Spa.
