More than 50% of Malaysia’s population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as at Sept 8

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 9): More than half or 50.5% of Malaysia’s population had been fully vaccinated against the Covid-19 pandemic as of yesterday (Sept 8) as the country's daily number of administered vaccine doses rose to 320,452 from 313,751 on Tuesday (Sept 7), according to the latest updates on Facebook today by the country's Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), citing data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF).

According to the CITF, the fully vaccinated category represents the number of people who have received the second jab of the two-dose vaccination or one dose of the single-shot CanSino Covid-19 vaccine.

The CITF said that cumulatively, about 37.39 million vaccine doses had been administered across the nation as of yesterday, involving about 20.94 million individuals or 64.1% of Malaysia’s population who had received at least one shot, including around 16.49 million people or 50.5% of the population who were fully inoculated.

Meanwhile, the 320,452 doses administered yesterday involved 128,038 persons who received their first shot and 192,414 recipients who were fully vaccinated, the CITF added.

Malaysia's Covid-19 vaccination scheme started on Feb 24 this year, with then prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin taking the first jab.

Based on the government's target of having 80% of the country's population of about 33 million people fully vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, the nation will need to have about 26 million individuals fully inoculated against the pandemic.
