KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 27): Malaysia reported 22,070 new Covid-19 cases today, down from an all-time high of 24,599 yesterday.
The country’s death toll increased by 339, including 99 brought-in-dead cases, to 15,550.
The new infections were detected from 153,854 individuals who were tested in the past 24 hours as of noon, representing a positivity rate of 14.34%, according to the Ministry of Health.
A total of 103 individuals died of the coronavirus in Selangor, 41 in Sabah, 40 in Kuala Lumpur, 38 in Penang, 37 in Johor, 20 in Kedah, 15 in Perak, 13 in Negeri Sembilan, eight each in Kelantan and Pahang, six in Melaka, five in Terengganu, three in Sarawak and two in Perlis.
Selangor reported 5,920 new cases, although the figure declined from yesterday's 6,936.
Sabah detected the second highest number of new infections, reporting 3,010 cases — the fourth straight day of staying above the 3,000 mark.
Of the 14 States and Federal Territories, only seven reported less than 1,000 new infections.
Sarawak detected 2,224 new infections, Kedah (2,072), Penang (1,829), Johor (1,809), Kuala Lumpur (1,068) and Kelantan (1,051).
States and Federal Territories that reported less than 1,000 new cases are Perak (939), Pahang (610), Melaka (589), Terengganu (488), Negeri Sembilan (338), Perlis (76), Putrajaya (39) and Labuan (eight).
The country's cumulative confirmed Covid-19 infections now stand at 1.66 million, while total fatalities linked to the coronavirus increased to 15,550.
Active cases fall to 265,295
Active cases, which carry high transmission risks, fell to 265,695 from 265,841 a day ago.
Daily recoveries today stood at 21,877 — slightly lower than new infections — bringing total recoveries so far to 1.38 million.
Currently, 982 patients are being treated in intensive care units including 470 needing respiratory assistance.
Among new infections today, 17,029 or 77.2% were patients who either were not vaccinated or had received only one dose, according to MOH.
Nonetheless, the asymptomatic or those with mild symptoms continued to make up the bulk of new cases, with 21,658 or 98.1% being in Categories 1 (no symptoms) or 2 (mild symptoms).
Those with more severe symptoms totalled 412 or 1.9%, spread across Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).
28 new clusters detected with 1,041 total infections
MOH announced 28 new clusters have been identified today, with 1,041 infections among them.
They comprise 12 workplace clusters, 15 community clusters, and one detention cluster. The country has reported 4,611 clusters so far, including 3,144 that have been declared ended — leaving 1,467 active clusters.
