KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 22): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 infections fell to 19,807 today, from 22,262 yesterday, bringing the total number of cases to-date to 1.56 million, the Health Ministry said.

This is the second day running that the country saw a declining trend in new infections. 

While continuing to have the highest number of daily cases, Selangor witnessed a decline in new infections to 5,379, from 7,011 yesterday.

The other states with four-digit new cases are Sabah (2,638), Kedah (1,948), Sarawak (1,772), Penang (1,501), Johor (1,391) and Kelantan (1,196).

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 232 Covid-19 deaths were reported in the 24 hours as of noon today, raising the total death toll in the nation to 14,168.

Forty-three of the latest fatalities were brought in dead cases, he said in a statement.

He said 94 of the deaths were reported in Selangor, 64 in Johor, 16 in Sabah, 15 in Kuala Lumpur, 11 in Kedah, nine in Kelantan, eight in Penang, five in Perak, three each in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, two in Terengganu, and one each in Sarawak and Pahang.

Daily recoveries came in slightly lower than today’s new infections, at 18,200. To date, 1.28 million have been declared cured from the virus.

Active cases surged further to 262,225, with 1,026 patients warded in the intensive care unit (ICU), including 496 on ventilators.

Of the latest infections, 16,368 or 82.6% were patients who either had no prior history of vaccination or had not completed their two-dose regimen, according to the Health Director-General.

Meanwhile, the asymptomatic or those with mild symptoms continued to make up the bulk of new cases, with 19,464 or 98.3% being in Categories 1 (no symptoms) or 2 (mild symptoms).

Those with more severe symptoms totalled 343 or 1.7%, spread across Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

The number of Covid-19 tests carried out dropped to 138,904 from yesterday’s 150,346, with a positivity rate of 14.26%.

Dr Noor Hisham said 24 new clusters were identified today, including 12 workplace clusters. The remainder were community clusters and high risk clusters.

The country has reported 4,442 Covid-19 clusters so far, including 3,006 that have been declared ended — leaving 1,436 active clusters.
