KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has today announced his resignation from the prime minister's post and will serve as caretaker prime minister under orders from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong until a new prime minister is appointed.

The 74-year-old former prime minister made the announcement at 3pm today, after an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al’Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara earlier today.

According to the statement issued by the palace, the King has accepted the resignation of Muhyiddin and his Cabinet. A new prime minister who has the majority’s support will be appointed to lead the Cabinet.

The King also stressed that a general election will not be an option for now, looking at the current situation where 484 or 79% of the state legislative assemblies are in the red zone.

In Muhyiddin’s 15-minute special address today, he said he had tried all ways to save the Perikatan Nasional government, and to manage the pandemic, the vaccination programme and economic rehabilitation. However, these efforts had failed.

Nevertheless, Muhyiddin stressed that he did not take the easy way out by sacrificing his principles nor conspiring with kleptocrats to stay in power as prime minister.

“I hope a new government could be formed soon to ensure the country’s administration will not be disrupted. The upcoming two months are crucial to us as we expect to achieve herd immunity by October this year. It is important to ensure the planning under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) will not be interrupted to allow all economic sectors to reopen soon, so the rakyat will be able to generate incomes to support themselves and their families,” he said.

On the vaccination programme, he noted that the government has ordered over 87 million doses of vaccines for all the residents in Malaysia with an allocation of RM4.36 billion.

“To all my fellow Malaysians, you don’t have to worry. My Cabinet has ordered more than enough vaccines for all of you. If the vaccination programme goes well, all of you will get vaccinated by the end of October.

"I hope the new government which takes over the administration of this country will take good care of all of you because it is the only thing that I care about. I care for you always,” concluded Muhyiddin.
