Genting Malaysia unit among 10 highest-spending lobbying entities in New York

KUALA LUMPUR (July 12): Genting Malaysia Bhd’s indirect 100%-owned subsidiary Genting New York LLC has been named among the 10 highest-spending lobbying entities in the US state of New York after the casino and hotel operator was reported to have spent US$1.22 million (about RM5.11 million) in 2020 for lobbying activities there.

According to the latest New York State Joint Commission on Public Ethics' annual report, Genting New York was the sixth highest-spending lobbying entity in New York in 2020.

Genting New York’s retained lobbyists are Albany Strategic Advisors LLC, Blue Suit Strategies LLC, C&C GL LLC, Jenkins, Patrick B. & Associates, Skdknickerbocker LLC, and Ward Strategies LLC, according to the commission's annual report.

"The list of the top 10 highest-spending lobbying entities for 2020 included traditionally active industries and interests related to business, real estate, healthcare, and education, but with some notable changes in the entities within those industries that fell within the top 10. Six of the top 10 spenders listed Covid-19 related lobbying activities in their 2020 lobbying reports. 

"The year also reflected a higher involvement of groups with criminal justice and civil rights interests. Though it spent less than in 2019, Greater New York Hospital Association, Inc took the top spot in 2020, reporting more than US$2.99 million in lobbying spending, as compared with its spending in 2019, when it ranked third among the top 10 entities with just over US$3 million. 

"Last year’s top spending entity, Taxpayers For An Affordable New York, which spent more than US$3.9 million in 2019, had no activity in 2020. Consistent with its ranking in 2019, 1199 SEIU Labor Management Initiatives, Inc. Healthcare Education Project continued to be the second highest spender in 2020. 

"Rounding out the top 10 in 2020 were New York State United Teachers (up from #9 in 2019); FWD.US, Inc. (new to the top 10); New York State Trial Lawyers Association (up from #10 last year); Genting New York; AARP; FWRA LLC; New Yorkers United For Justice (down from #4 last year) and RAI Services Company (new to the top 10),” the commission said.

Genting Malaysia’s US casino and hotel operations comprise those in the US states of New York and Florida, according to Genting Malaysia’s website.

Within New York state, Genting Malaysia runs the Resorts World Casino New York City (RWNYC) in New York City and Resorts World Catskills (RWC) within the Catskills Mountains, Genting Malaysia said.

"Additionally, the group embarked on an expansion project at RWNYC to expand its facilities and attractions, including the development of a new 400-room hotel. 

"Over in Miami, the group owns a contiguous 30-acre (12ha) prime freehold waterfront site overlooking Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami, Florida. The site includes the Omni Center, which consists of retail space, office space and the 527-room Hilton Miami Downtown,” Genting Malaysia said.
