KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): A total of 6,437 new confirmed Covid-19 infections were detected in the country over the last 24 hours — the highest in 11 days. The last time the country reported over 6,000 cases was on June 18 (6,440).
The latest cases were detected from the testing of 68,052 people across the country, representing a positivity rate of 9.46%.
Selangor — the worst-hit state — contributed 2,299 cases, up from 1,989 yesterday, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today. This was followed by Kuala Lumpur with 1,361 cases (from 469 previously) and Negeri Sembilan with 700 cases (from 629).
Post-pandemic recovery amid rising inflation
Higher inflation in the US and globally, fear of quantitative easing, a resurgence of the Covid-19 virus and the slow pace of vaccination are key factors that will cause higher volatility in the equity market. They are likely to dampen market sentiment, especially concerns surrounding the US inflation rate.
There were 107 deaths linked to the virus today, after daily fatalities remained in the double digits for 13 straight days.
Of the latest fatalities, 43 were reported in Selangor, 16 in Negeri Sembilan, 11 in Kuala Lumpur, seven each in Kedah and Melaka, six in Johor, four each in Sabah, Kelantan, and Labuan, two each in Sarawak and Pahang, and one in Terengganu.
This brought total deaths linked to the coronavirus on June 29 to 5,108 from just 2,867 as at June 1.
Active cases showed an upward trend for the fourth consecutive day to 62,844, as daily recoveries again came in lower than new infections at 5,298. Total recoveries now number 677,751, while the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases detected nationwide stands at 745,703.
The number of patients in intensive care units climbed to 905 from 899 yesterday, with 455 needing ventilators to breathe.
27 clusters identified
Dr Noor Hisham said 27 new Covid-19 clusters were discovered yesterday, bringing the number of active clusters to 887. There were 13 community clusters and 12 workplace clusters, while the rest are high-risk group and education clusters.
A total of 2,821 infection clusters have been detected locally, of which 1,934 have been declared ended.
