KUALA LUMPUR (June 22): Malaysia reported a total of 578,105 Covid-19 infections since the start of 2021 up to last Saturday (June 19), of which 398,846 or 69% were identified as sporadic cases, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Sporadic cases refer to Covid-19 cases detected within a community that cannot be linked to any existing established cluster of infections. These sporadic cases are detected through screening at workplaces, screening among communities, or symptomatic screening.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, there were 151,725 sporadic cases in Selangor, the most populous state, followed by Kuala Lumpur (44,517) and Sarawak (40,889).

Among the three districts in Selangor with the highest sporadic cases were Petaling with 3,905 cases, followed by Hulu Langat (2,783) and Klang (2,482).

On June 6, Dr Noor Hisham warned of the rising number of new infections and deaths that were caused by sporadic cases.

He explained that one of the factors contributing to the situation was the emergence of new variants in the community which had higher rates of infection and mortality, in addition to the more widespread transmission of Covid-19 in the community.

Malaysia reported 4,611 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases yesterday — the lowest in 35 days — representing a positivity rate of 7.9% from 58,384 individuals who went for Covid-19 screening.

Sadly, another 69 Covid-19-related deaths were reported, raising the country's death toll to 4,477.
