KUALA LUMPUR (May 2): A huge and growing sinkhole that “is expanding by dozens of metres each day” is threatening “to swallow a house” owned by the Sanchez family in Santa Maria Zacatepec, Puebla state, Mexico, AFP reported today.

According to the report, the hole first appeared as a loud crash on Saturday (May 29) that sounded like a lighting strike.

The Sanchez family then discovered that the ground had “collapsed just metres from their home”.

Besides quickly filling up with water, the hole started to quickly “grow” – up to 60m by Monday and around 80m on Tuesday and “perilously close to the house of the Sanchez family, who fear they will be left homeless”, reported AFP.

Local officials and scientists have said that “geological fault or variations in the soil's water content” could have caused the sinkhole.

The latest reports say that “large chunks of earth have continually broken away from the rim”, prompting the local authorities to set up a security cordon to keep curious onlookers at a safe distance.

The Sanchez family, meanwhile, are of course very worried.

"We have nothing. We're not from here. We have no relatives. We're alone," said Heriberto Sanchez, who is originally from the south-eastern state of Veracruz.
