KUALA LUMPUR (April 3): Malaysia reported 1,638 new Covid-19 cases today, up from 1,294 reported yesterday, marking the fifth straight day of the figure staying above the 1,000 mark.
This brought the country's cumulative confirmed infections to 349,610, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
Three more deaths were recorded — one each in Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Sarawak — raising total fatalities due to the virus to 1,286, said MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.
The deceased — all Malaysians — were aged between 50 and 87 years.
Perak had the highest number of new infections at 494 today, of which 486 cases came from the Jalan Pelabuhan cluster linked to a factory worker hostel located in Jalan Pelabuhan Utama in Manjung, according to Noor Hisham.
“The cluster was reported on Feb 20, 2021. The index case (a factory worker) was reported to be positive for Covid-19 on Feb 13, 2021 through screening of symptomatic cases,” he said.
As of today, he said, some 1,312 positive Covid-19 cases linked to the cluster were confirmed from 1,689 individuals who had been screened.
After Perak, Selangor was in the second place, recording 352 infections, followed by Sarawak (290).
Meanwhile, the number of active cases carrying high transmission risk increased to 14,432, from 14,246 the day before, as new recoveries came in at 1,449 — less than new infections. Total recoveries stood at 333,892 or 95.5% of overall infections.
The newly confirmed Covid-19 cases reported today comprised 1,631 local cases, while the remaining seven were imported cases.
Seven new clusters detected
Seven more Covid-19 clusters were identified by the ministry, of which four were linked to community infections, while three were linked to workplaces.
The four community clusters were the Kampung Binyu cluster in Sarawak with 68 infections; the Jalan Merdeka cluster in Johor (29); the Simpang Tiga Merotai cluster in Sabah (10); and the Jalan Kenanga cluster in Melaka (11).
Meanwhile, the three workplace clusters were the Jalan Bandar Sembilan cluster in Selangor, which saw 21 infections; the Teknologi Peramu Jaya cluster in Pahang (36); and the Jalan Kubota Sentral cluster in Sabah (nine).
To date, 1,395 clusters have been reported in the country, with 1,038 of them declared to have ended.
