Though not unexpected, it is still a little sobering to know we will  be closing  the year on muted stay-at-home celebrations sans the traditional loud bangs and sky-high sparks.

A few popular countdown spots have announced the cancellation of their firework displays to avoid public gatherings which could increase the risk of the Covid-19 virus spread, according to reports by online news portal Soya Cincau

Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur

Dataran Merdeka has been one of the main new year countdown celebration spots every year. This year though, it is currently closed for maintenance, reported the Malay Mail. Coupled with the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) still in force in Kuala Lumpur, city folks will have to usher in 2021 in quieter ways.

They could join a a virtual event on New Year’s Eve organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Themed as “Wargakota Terus Bertahan“, it will feature performances by the KL Orchestra and local Malaysian artists.  Konsert Ambang 2021 will be livestreamed on DBKL’s official Facebook page and Bapakku FM at 10pm on the Dec 31, 2020.

Resorts World Genting, Pahang

Being mainly a leisure and hospitality-based industry, Resort World Genting has been among the hardest hit by the pandemic. Consquently, the resort has “re-engineered” certain processes to adapt to the new normal.

“We have also created an environment that is safe for all our visitors, employees, business partners and community by implementing stringent safety measures throughout the resort,” it stated, as reported by the Malay Mail.

Nevertheless, although the annual firework display has been called off, there will still be various other attractions for visitors during new year’s eve.

The Curve, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

For the first time in 14 years, the Mutiara Damansara Commercial Centre (MDCC) is shelving its firework display, which had been one of the highlights for Petaling Jaya folks celebrating the new year.

“What’s important for any New Year celebration is to have renewed hope, gratitude, and a positive outlook for the year ahead. This time around, The Curve urges everyone to make the safety of individuals, family, friends and the community at large a priority,” cited a spokesperson from the mall.

IPC Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Adapting to the new normal, MDCC, which also owns IPC Shopping Centre, is bringing its new year celebrations online with a 12-hour-long “IPC Live Shopping Fiesta”.

“Viewers will be able to shop and enjoy special deals and entertainment by renowned international and local artists. There will be 30 over tenants showcasing their products and services during the livestream,” General Manager Karyn Lim is reported saying.

“Shoppers can easily make their purchase within the Facebook platform and have it delivered within 24 hours in the Klang Valley, courtesy of our delivery partner, Lalamove,” she added.

Meanwhile, other malls that have announced the cancellation of their firework displays are Quennsbay Mall in Penang and all Sunway Malls nationwide.
