KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 7): Opened for business for over 20 years and having been one of the most happening night-life spots in Kuala Lumpur, Beach Club Cafe at Jalan P Ramlee has no choice but to close down due to a prolonged shutdown forced by measures in curbing the Covid-19 pandemic, Free Malaysia Today reported today.

The group behind the entertainment outlet, Trend Matrix Enterprises Sdn Bhd, said the closure of its signature outlet is indefinite.

The report said while most sectors of the economy have been reopened in June, only clubs, pubs and bars that serve food alongside alcohol have been allowed to operate until midnight.

Beach Club reopened partially for dine-in and takeaway but the modified business model is not sustainable as the entertainment outlet relied heavily on tourists.

“We were a 95% international tourist-based business… Our primary customers were tourists from all over the world and we had to close as we have been unable to stretch our losses since March,” said Trend Matrix managing director Judy Ng.

According to the report, staff have been laid off due to financial pressure.

Ng’s late husband, Ronnie Choong, transformed Jalan P Ramlee into a clubbing hub when he set up the Emporium Grand Café and Beach Club Café in 1999.

The success of both outlets encouraged Choong to set up Nouvo & Sangria Bar in 2002 followed by Poppy Collection and Rum Jungle two years later, all in the same area.
