KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 23): The restrictions of only 80 Members of Parliament (MP) are allowed to be in the Dewan Rakyat and limit for only 20 minutes of speech time, are being questioned by the opposition party today, reported Malay Mail.
Port Dickson Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to allow more than 80 MPs to enter the House to participate in ministers’ winding-up speeches on Budget 2021.
He also added that the allotted time of only 20 minutes for each speech is unreasonable.
His comments come after the Speaker ruled that only 80 MPs are allowed inside the Dewan Rakyat at any one time and for only 20 minutes during ministers’ winding-up speeches for their ministries on Budget 2021.
Former health minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad, who is also the Kuala Selangor MP, said the MPs are required to undergo swab tests for Covid-19 regularly and the Parliament building is sanitised daily.
“I question why we should restrict ministers to only 20 minutes. This is not based on science… Let’s base our discussions on science and evidence,” he said.
Meanwhile, in responding to the queries, Azhar said he practises an open-door policy and actively engages with MPs and often requests meetings with them, even if they do not always show up.
