KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 16): The number of new COVID-19 cases jumped above the 600-level again to 629 today, compared with 589 yesterday. The number of active cases breached the 6,000 mark to 6,323, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH). Six more fatalities were reported, with the country’s COVID-19 death toll now up to 176 cases.
Some 245 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours. The total number of recoveries is now at 12,259. Of the 629 new infections reported today, 489 were in Sabah, which is currently the State with the most number of active cases.
MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 260 cases came from screening of close contacts of positive COVID-19 patients, 158 were from other COVID-19 screenings and 71 cases were from the existing COVID-19 clusters.
Selangor reported 50 new cases, Penang with 33, Labuan (19), Perak (nine), Kuala Lumpur (eight), Kedah (seven), Johor (five), Melaka (three), Putrajaya (two), Negeri Sembilan (one) and Pahang (one). Around 38% of today’s new cases involved a few clusters such as Tembok cluster, Remand Prison cluster and Seberang Perai Prison cluster. All of these cases were isolated in the prisons, according to Noor Hisham.
Meanwhile, he said the total number of infections involving those visiting Sabah since Sept 20 increased to 437, after 16 more cases were reported today.
From the 629 cases, two were imported involving Malaysians who returned from New Zealand (one case) and Singapore (one). Currently, 99 people are being treated at intensive care units, with 31 of them requiring ventilator support. Some 245 COVID-19 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours.
The total number of recoveries is now at 12,259. Malaysia’s total confirmed infections increased to 18,758.
