KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 22): Malaysia reported eight new Covid-19 cases today, of which five were from the Tawar cluster in Kedah, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

This brings the tally of confirmed Covid-19 infections in Malaysia to 9,257 cases, with the Tawar cluster recording 63 infections. A total of 2,942 people related to this cluster have been screened so far, and case tracking and close contact screening for this cluster are still ongoing.

The other three new infections recorded today were imported cases involving one Malaysian and two non-citizens.

Meanwhile, four Covid-19 patients recovered and were released today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 8,949, or 96.7% of total cases.

As such, the total number of active cases stood at 183. There was no new Covid-19-related deaths reported today, so the disease's death toll in the country remains at 125, which is 1.35% of total cases.

In the statement today, MoH director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah addressed concerns over a viral message on social media regarding certain areas in Subang Jaya that are supposedly Covid-19 hotspots.

He reiterated that the message is not true.

Noor Hisham explained that a Covid-19 case was reported on Aug 10 that involved a foreign worker who had undergone screening at work. While waiting for the test results, his employer took the initiative to place him under quarantine at a hotel in Subang Jaya, a location registered in the MySejahtera application.

However, after receiving the Covid-19 screening results, the registration address of the case was transferred to his residential address at Bandar Tun Hussein Onn in Cheras, before he was admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

"This is important because all active case tracking actions as well as close contact screening are carried out at the location of the case residence, namely in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Cheras. This location is also updated in the MySejahtera application as the address of the case," he said.

"The MoH would like to thank for the cooperation in reporting any issues related to Covid-19 to MoH. The MoH would also like to advise the public to only share information that is proven to be valid, so as not to cause panic in the community," Noor Hisham added.
