KUALA LUMPUR (May 8): South Korea, the poster child of how a country can control the Covid-19 pandemic, is now getting ready for an “inevitable” second wave of the disease after it was discovered that an infected man in Seoul went on club hopping spree recently, reported Asia News Network (ANN).

Even though this latest development has “triggered alarm” South Korean health officials also said that “they will be better placed to combat the virus the next time round”.

According to the ANN report, health authorities said the 29-year-old man could have come into contact with up to 2,000 people and contact tracing is underway. Forty three of the man’s colleagues have tested for the virus.

The report also stated that the man went to Seoul's famous nightlife district, Itaewon, from last Friday night until early morning Saturday. He then developed a high fever and diarrhoea late Saturday and went to a hospital the next day.

Health Ministry spokesman Son Young-rae said in an online conference that South Korea’s “surveillance system and screening capability would be able to identify a potential spread linked to a confirmed case almost immediately”.

"A second outbreak will be inevitable at some point, but it will not be like the first wave that saw an explosive surge

"Given our social distancing policy, the outbreak will be contained in much smaller clusters. The speed of infection will also be slower,” Son explained to ANN.
