KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 3): The Philippines has reported the first death outside China from the novel coronavirus outbreak, AFP reported yesterday.

According to the report, the 44-year-old Chinese man came from the city of Wuhan and “appears to have been infected before arriving in the Philippines”.

“This is the first reported death outside China,” Rabindra Abeyasinghe, the WHO representative to the Philippines, told the media.

“However, we need to take into mind that this is not a locally acquired case. This patient came from the epicentre of this outbreak,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that as of yesterday, more than 2,000 newly-confirmed cases of novel coronavirus were reported in China.

The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia today informed Bernama that 2,829 new cases have been confirmed, bringing the total number to 17,205.

Meanwhile, there 57 new deaths were reported (56 in Hubei Province and one in Chongqing Municipality), bringing the total number of fatalities to 361 as of Sunday midnight.

On a happier note, 475 patients were cured and discharged after another 147 were successfully discharged on Sunday.
