KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 18): The government has agreed to lower the voting age to 18 from the current 21, according to the Mid-term Review of the 11th Malaysia Plan 2016-2020 report.
“In ensuring better participation especially among youth, efforts will be undertaken to lower the minimum voting age to 18 years,” the report said.
Lowering the voting age is one of the major reforms that were pledged by the Pakatan Harapan coalition during the 14th general election (GE14).
In Malaysia, the right to vote is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, which currently stipulates that a citizen who has reached the age of 21 years, is resident in a particular election constituency and has been registered as a voter, is eligible and has the right to vote. — theedgemarkets.com
