GEORGE TOWN (August 8): There are around 500 tenants in Penang People’s Housing Projects (PPR) flats that have been found to be abusing the low monthly rental of RM124, some even by subletting the units for RM500 a month.

State Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said in the state assembly yesterday, that households do not earn under RM1,500 a month forever, and once their income improves above that level, they should make way for other families who need the housing.

The Star reports that Jagdeep was replying to a question from Zolkifly Md Lazim (PH-Telok Bahang), who was seeking clarification on complaints of residents being evicted from PPR flats.

Jagdeep has been criticised by the Auditor-General, for being slow to evict those who do not qualify for PPr housing at present, or those who abuse the privileges.

“There are about 500 cases but we have taken action on only about 50. It’s an administrative process but I insisted on an enforcement committee and the Housing Department must go through me before they evict any tenant.

“I found that some families have special circumstances and are truly unable to even pay the RM124 or move out and find another home.

“So we look at every case individually and are slow to act. If I get scolded by the Auditor-General, scold-lah. Some people are really poor,” The Star quoted Jagdeep as saying.
