KUALA LUMPUR (March 22): An online application portal is now available for those hoping to own a home under the new affordable housing scheme started by the Sultan Ibrahim Foundation.

According to a report on the New Straits Times daily, online applications for the homes on www.yayasansultanibrahim.org.my were made available from 5pm today.

It was reported earlier that Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar wanted Johoreans to be able to own a bungalow or semi-detached house for just below RM100,000 each.

“I want Bangsa Johor to be a home-owning society,” Sultan Ibrahim said.

“I want this to be a first-of-its-kind housing scheme that is truly affordable, offering the cheapest and best quality houses to the people.”

In an interview with the Media Prima Bhd Group at the Flintstone Palace in Mersing, the sultan said the “Rumah Impian Sultan Ibrahim” programme will start with 1,840 homes, including bungalows and semi-detached homes that would be built in phases at three locations in Johor

He also described the affordable homes as a special gift from him to Johoreans in conjunction with his 59th birthday.

It was also revealed in the same interview that the units with a floor area of 1,100 sq feet and three rooms are for Johoreans who cannot afford to buy a house, those who do not own a house and those from the low-income group.

"I will make sure these house are of good quality. The roofing trusses would not be made of wood, but instead, we will use galvanised steel.

"The doors would not be made of cheap plywood, and it must be made of more durable material. I do not want to build low-quality homes because that would be embarrassing. I want the people to be satisfied with the quality of the homes," the New Straits Times reported the sultan as saying in another earlier report.

The sultan also expects the programme to shake up the housing industry and force private developers to bring down house prices.
