Recognising the gap in accessible and engaging online resources for financial knowledge, DoitDuit initially began as a page for HY Tan’s friend to share their interest in investing.
It quickly evolved into a thriving online and real-life community for people from various backgrounds to learn about finances.
“We coined the term ‘investment friend’ because we wanted it to feel like we were going on a journey alongside our audience, and to build a community where we can all learn together,” said Tan on the concept behind the account.

Tan, through DoitDuit, breaks down the perceived barriers to investing. However, she hopes that more will be done in the future to educate the next generation on financial literacy.

While gaining financial independence feels increasingly unattainable for Malaysian Gen Z’ers, Tan suggests shifting our perspectives on what ‘financial independence’ means, and taking advantage of any opportunity to build our active income.

Traditional life goals like buying a property or settling down, may still be on the back of Gen Z’s minds.

Whatever your life’s journey, Tan’s advice is to not get sidetracked by comparing yourself to other people, but to focus on your own long-term goals.

And becoming more financially responsible does not have to be a complicated process, according to Tan.
For Tan, who studied finance, and helps out with her family business as a stockbroker, she witnessed firsthand the progression from traditional to modern investing.
“During my grandfather’s time, the only way to get access to information about investing was through newspapers, and sometimes TV. I think I was fortunate to be alive during the time of the Internet, where resources are readily available,” said Tan.

Since DoitDuit was founded in mid-2021, Tan has noticed some changes to the way we invest, with a shift towards passive investing instead of active investing. An increase in digital brokerage platforms will also likely influence future investment culture.
Tan’s personal goals for the future are simple.
“I just want to be able to support my family and friends, and take care of my dogs! Of course, I am still going to look for ways to increase my own active income, so I can invest more, and in turn, increase my passive income too,” said Tan with a smile.
