Overview

Ampang Jaya, more commonly known as Ampang, was one of the earliest areas in the Klang Valley to be opened for tin mining, in the 1850’s. The place was named in reference to the miners' dams, the name "Ampang" derives from “empangan” or dam in Malay.

Due to the creation of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur in 1974, Ampang district was split into two, in which the west portion belongs to Kuala Lumpur and the east belongs to Selangor.

The two demarked areas are unique and each paint a different picture, both in terms of atmosphere and purpose. Ampang, Kuala Lumpur or Ampang Hilir is a modern, vibrant commercial area with high-end, high-rise residential addresses. It’s also known as a diplomatic hub, having a number of high commissions and embassies. Ampang, Selangor is a residential hub populated with housings and shops.

Ampang, Selangor is the home to the National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara) and the Taman Rimba Ampang (Ampang Recreational Forest) -- a recreational park offering a retreat from the busy city life with its quiet environment and the river's cool and clear waters. Istana Daerah Hulu Langat is a palace in Ampang, the official residence members of the Selangor royal family.

Major highways and roads connecting Ampang with other placed in Klang Valley include MRR2, Jalan Gombak, AKLEH Expressway, DUKE Highway and Sungai Besi Expressway. The area is served by LRT Ampang Line and various bus routes.
