Overview
Kuala Kerai (or Kuala Krai) is a town in the state of Kelantan, in the northeast of Peninsula Malaysia. Kuala Kerai is located approximately 70 kilometres to the south of Kota Bharu. Kuala Kerai is situated on hilly land, and before the 20th century, the entire area was a tropical rainforest.
Kuala Kerai owes its origin and subsequent growth to the onset of the East Coast railway in the 1920s. The opening of the railway line which ran through the undeveloped interior of Malaysia to link the state of Kelantan resulted in people moving into the area to carry out farming activities on the abundant land, as well as settlements becoming established along its route. Eventually, this led to road links, which in turn were followed by the establishment of villages and towns.
