IPOH (Dec 9): Ipoh mayor Datuk Zamri Man has lived up to his promise to revive the long abandoned Ipoh Riverfront Park (formerly People’s Park) on the banks of Sungei Kinta, on Jalan Sultan Iskandar, and to hand it over to the community.
Construction of a new Jalan Sultan Iskandar entrance to the park has started and is expected to be completed by Dec 20. Currently, visitors have to go around the back of shop houses on Jalan Bijeh Timah.
The renovation costing RM150,000 involves the building of the entrance and exits and the realignment of adjacent parking spaces.
Zamri, during a recent gotong-royong at the park, assured the public that the city council would give priority to upgrading the abandoned park, as well as other public parks across Ipoh.
In a statement to the media Zamri said the opening of the slip roads, walkways and parking lots would reduce traffic congestion.
“The upgrade will provide convenience to the people of Ipoh and enable them to have fun in the park in a more comfortable environment,” added Zamri.
The Malaysian Insider had previously highlighted the condition of the park, which despite a RM4.4 million facelift, appeared all but abandoned. -- The Malaysian Insider
