KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 9): Marriott International Inc officially opened the Penang Marriott Complex along Gurney Drive in George Town, Penang, on Sunday.

The 55-storey tower comprises three components, the 223-room Penang Marriott Hotel, the 90-suite Marriott Executive Apartments, Penang, and the 302-unit Marriott Residences Penang, according to a press release on Monday. Following the opening of the Penang Marriott Complex, Marriott International now has 50 properties in Malaysia.

In a press release, Rajeev Menon, Marriott International's president of Asia-Pacific excluding China, said, “Opening Marriott International’s 50th property in Malaysia marks a significant milestone in our Asia-Pacific growth journey, a continent that continues to be a strategic driver of our global expansion.

“The Penang Marriott Complex, the first in Malaysia to include three brands with the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio under one roof, is a fitting addition. Set along the iconic Gurney Drive in Penang, we are excited to offer guests and owners Marriott’s signature blend of modern amenities and timeless charm, creating lasting memories in one of Malaysia’s most sought-after island destinations.”

The hotel component offers several culinary experiences such as Kucina, which serves Italian cuisine; Sago, which provides all-day dining of local and international flavours; and Lava Java for light meals and snacks. Guests of the hotel will also have access to a 24-hour fitness centre, a steam room and an outdoor infinity swimming pool with views of the Gurney Street seafront.

Meanwhile, the executive apartments will offer one- to two-bedroom units featuring the brand’s signature apartments with premiere hotel services for long stays. These units will have sleeping spaces, living areas and gourmet kitchens. These residents will be able to access the component’s fitness and business centres, staff services and security for 24 hours a day.

As for the residences, a 45m infinity pool, a communal clubhouse, a gymnasium and a herb garden are among the facilities offered. Residents of this component will also have access to concierge and housekeeping services as well as 24-hour security.

Also present at the opening ceremony was former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, who said the opening of the Penang Marriott Complex is a pivotal moment for the state. “ This development strengthens our capacity to welcome visitors from all over the world, while also enriching the experiences they will have here.”

Other guests include guest of honour Penang governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, chairman of the board of Marriott International David Marriott, executive chairman of Oriental Holdings Bhd (KL:ORIENT) and owner of Penang Marriott Complex Datuk Loh Kian Chong, and Marriott International area vice-president for Indonesia and Malaysia Ramesh Jackson.
