KUALA LUMPUR (April 3): Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid (pictured), former managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), has been appointed as chairman of Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) — the wholly owned transit arm of the Ministry of Finance.

Bashir fills the seat that was left vacant by Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid, who had resigned as chairman and director on March 7, 2022. Azhar was appointed MRT Corp’s chairman in May 2021.

Bashir began his career in aviation when he joined the now-defunct Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) as a management trainee in 1972. He served MAS for 29 years where he rose up the ranks to be the executive vice-president of the national airline.

In 2001, he was appointed by the government as aviation adviser to the Ministry of Transport where he served for two years.

He then served as the managing director of airport operator MAHB from 2003 to 2014 and subsequently was appointed its adviser until 2017.

In a statement on Monday (April 3), MRT Corp said Bashir remains active in the global aviation scene where he is currently adviser to GMR Airports Group, which manages airports in India and overseas. GMR is partly owned by Aeroport De Paris.

He is also the regional adviser to the Airport Council World Governing Board and special adviser to Airport Council Asia-Pacific Regional Board.
