KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 9): Five new Covid-19 clusters were detected today — namely the Mikro cluster, Symphony Magazine cluster, Pasai cluster, Teknologi Kesidang cluster and Palut cluster — with 207 infections, according to Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a statement today, Dr Noor Hisham said the Mikro cluster had the highest number of new infections, involving the districts of Johor Bahru, Kulai and Pontian with 97 cases. This new cluster was a result of the targeted screening in a factory, where 588 individuals were tested.

The Symphony Magazine cluster in Penang, on the other hand, saw 44 new cases, while the Pasai cluster in Sarawak saw 73 cases, the Teknologi Kesidang cluster in Melaka had 18 cases and the Palut cluster in Terengganu had 10 cases.

To date, there are 581 clusters in the country, of which 325 have ended, including the six clusters declared to have ended today, including the Bukit Gemok cluster, Erima cluster, Baloi cluster, Talang-talang cluster, View Kolombong cluster and Jalan Kilang cluster.

There are now 256 active clusters. Of these, 58 saw increases in cases today, and the top three clusters that reported the highest increases in new cases were the Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (291 cases), Beringin cluster (226) and Jalan Perindustrian cluster (115).

Malaysia today saw 2,451 new Covid-19 cases, which brought the total number of infections in the country to 133,559, while total active cases rose to a fresh peak of 26,185.

Among the active cases, 177 patients were being treated in intensive care units (ICUs), with 82 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, 1,401 patients were cured and discharged, bringing the total number of recoveries to 106,832, while five deaths were reported today.
