KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 2): Malaysia recorded today its highest daily number of persons who have recovered from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic at 3,321, which brought the total number of recoveries to 94,492 or 80.5% of the nation’s total number of cases so far.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Malaysia reported today 2,295 newly-confirmed Covid-19 cases, which brought the cumulative number of infected individuals in the country to 117,373 so far. 

Nine Covid-19-related deaths were reported today, and Penang emerged among the top three contributors of new daily cases in the nation.

Dr Noor Hisham said the nine deaths — involving Malaysians — brought the cumulative number of fatalities in the country due to the pandemic to 483 so far.

He said the 2,295 newly-reported infections today comprise 2,286 local transmissions and nine imported cases.

According to him, Selangor reported the highest daily number of new cases at 638 followed by Johor and Penang at 580 and 288 respectively.

Across the country, Dr Noor Hisham said there are 22,398 active cases so far, and 125 Covid-19 patients are being treated in the intensive care unit.

“[Out of the 125,] a total of 51 cases need breathing assistance,” he said.

Meanwhile, the deceased today comprise six men and three women aged between 41 and 82 years.

Dr Noor Hisham said among the deceased, two each were from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan while one each were from Perak, Sabah and Kelantan.
