KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 24): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad left Istana Negara via Gate 1 after a 90-minute audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, Malaysiakini reported.

He waved and smiled at media personnel gathered outside the gate as he left. A palace official blew on a trumpet as the entourage exited the palace.

He had arrived at the palace at 4.45pm in a Proton Perdana car with police escorts.

The 94-year-old leader had earlier shocked the nation with his resignations as the Prime Minister and chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

It followed several meetings of political parties from both sides of the divide, namely Bersatu, PKR, UMNO, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Parti Warisan Sabah, which took place yesterday, amid talk of possible realignment in the country's political landscape.
