KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): The government appears to recognise that income gaps are growing more alarming than previously acknowledged. In its mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), three out of the six pillars outlined in the economic blueprint are geared at achieving more equal distribution of wealth.
The second pillar aims at inclusive development and the well-being of the people, while the third targets balanced regional development. The fourth focuses on human capital empowerment.
Citing the Household Income and Basic Amenities Survey in 2016, the review observed the minimum threshold in the high-income household bracket was RM10,456 per month, while the threshold to exit the low-income household bracket was RM2,614. The RM7,842 difference underscored the huge income gap between the two segments.
The blueprint also revealed in 2016, 2.78 million households were classified as B40 out of a total of 7.6 million households.
