PETALING JAYA (Sept 5): A steel mill in the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) has agreed to lower the height of its perimeter wall, said Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Dr Ong Kian Ming.

Alliance Steel (M) Sdn Bhd will be submitting a new plan for its 9.2km perimeter wall, which locals have named the “Great Wall of China in Kuantan”, to Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan, reported The Star.

If approved, the less-imposing design will see the concrete portion of the perimeter wall lowered to 1.8m from the current 3m, topped with transparent fencing.

This would enable outsiders to see what is happening inside the 287.3ha compound of the mill, he added.

The wall had become a symbol of discontent among Kuantan folk who allege that Malaysians were not allowed inside the MCKIP.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had previously said he would like to see it taken down figuratively and literally.

The mill's deputy commander Steve Hu said the wall was necessary to protect the expensive equipment and workers and prevent wildlife from entering the site, which is close to a jungle.
