GEORGE TOWN (August 16): Open burning activities are advised against by the Penang government, as the worsening haze blankets the state, reported the NST.

As of 6pm today, the air pollutant index (API) readings recorded a moderate level of 85 in Minden and 80 in Balik Pulau.

On the mainland, unhealthy levels peaked at 124 earlier in the day, but went down to 96 by 6pm in Seberang Jaya.

An API reading of 0 to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy and 300 and above, hazardous.

State Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh also advised the people to keep watch on their lands and to prevent from open burning activities, reported the NST.

“With the API reading reaching the unhealthy level, we hope the people can refrain from open burning activities to further aggravate the situation.

Phee explained that the haze in Penang resulted from cross-border haze pollution from Kalimantan and Sumatera in Indonesia, carried in by the southwest monsoon wind.

Meanwhile in Alor Setar, Kedah, the reading was 145 as at 6pm, Kangar in Perlis was at 137.

Most areas in Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan stayed at moderate levels below 80, except for Klang which reached an unhealthy 110 at 6pm.

Also at an unhealthy level was Sarawak’s Mukah at 134, while Kuching was at 88.

All other locations across Malaysia were listed as starting from 51, indicating that moderate haze is just beginning across the country while some areas have higher, unhealthy levels.
