Overview
Mention the word ‘Batu Caves’ and the first thing to pop into any locals’ minds is one of Malaysia's most distinctive geographical features of awe-inspiring natural caverns found within the country's limestone abutments. Located within one of Kuala Lumpur’s biggest blasts of nature, the caves are one of the country’s most iconic sights and holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Murugan. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converge here during the three-day Thaipusam festival in late January or early February every year and climb 272 steps to reach them.
In the last couple of decades, the surrounding area has changed from a small village to accommodate industrial estates and new housing and commercial developments. Some of the earliest housing estates here, from around the 1970s, are Taman Batu Caves, Taman Selayang, Taman Amaniah, Taman Sri Selayang, and Taman Medan Batu Caves.
As a matured suburb, Batu Caves has several integrated residential and commercial developments. For instance, Sunway Batu Caves comprises four-storey shops, serviced apartments, condominiums and two-storey link houses. Meanwhile, Taman Raintree is a high-rise residential enclave comprising condominiums, apartments and townhouses nestled within almost a 30-acre leasehold site here. Most of Taman Raintree’s development showcases low-density units within a gated-and-guarded community environment. Hence, safety and security is prioritised.
Another significant enclave in Batu Caves is Taman Sri Gombak, which was developed in several phases over the years, and as at mid-2017, goes right up to Phase 9. One can see low-cost terrace houses here but the majority of the houses here are two-storey terrace houses which come in several types and built-up sizes. The Villas @ Gemilang further exemplifies the spectrum of housing types in Batu Caves. This newer residential development consists of a mere 48 units of 3½-storey villas with the beautiful scenery of Batu Caves in view. These abodes have been designed to take full advantage of the green landscape with large balconies and outdoor roof gardens, along with a paddling pool.
Amenities and Facilities
There is a wide range of amenities to be found within this developed suburb. Firstly, there are a good number of government schools to address main educational needs. Besides that, the commercial component here hosts several clinics, restaurants, banks, gas stations, a wet market, local mini markets, a night market and Giant Hypermarket. Even though Batu Caves Temple is the clear landmark here, mosques are commonly found within the differing neighbourhoods. Furthermore, it houses a police station.
A great bonus and highlight here is a recreational park called Taman Tasik Sri Gombak. The park, surrounded by an abundance of greenery, is very serene, and the air is fresh and cool as it is situated on a slope. Hence, residents can enjoy a leisurely walk or a good jog as well as fish at the lake.
Residents here can also enjoy activities such as natural rock climbing, flying fox, abseiling and spelunking (cave exploration) at Gua Damai Extreme Park nearby.
Accessibility and Transportation
In terms of connectivity, Batu Caves is easily accessible via the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). Besides that, the neighborhood is within close proximity to Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), Selayang-Kepong Highway, Jalan Ipoh and Karak Highway.
For residents who prefer to commute via public transportation, Gombak Rapid KL LRT Station and Batu Caves KTM Komuter Station are situated within a 15-minute reach to catch a train. The latter is a new RM515 million KTM Komuter rail extension from Sentul to Batu Caves which began operations in July 2010, serving the rebuilt Batu Caves Komuter station as well as the fast-growing demographics. Moreover, Rapid KL buses and taxis are available too.
