Overview
Seremban is a city and capital of Negeri Sembilan located in West Peninsular Malaysia. It officially gained a city status on 20 January 2020.
Before being renamed as Seremban, the place was previously called Sungei Ujong (or Sungai Ujong) when it was first founded as a town. Sungai Ujong is a nearby river flowing nearby. Seremban is referred as "Fu Rong" in Mandarin or "Fu Yong" in Cantonese among the Chinese-speaking community.
Situated in the Linggi River Valley, the river has supported the development of the town by providing the important transportation route for tin traders in the olden days and currently by supplying water.
Tin ore found nearby Rasah has resulted the town to flourish as a mining and business centre. Today, Seremban becomes a business and commercial centre in Negeri Sembilan. Manufacturing sector is the main contributor of the state’s economy.
Seremban is the cultural centre for the Minangkabau, which is derived from menang kerbau translated as “winning buffalo”. A unique aspect of their culture is the roof structure with pointed edges that resembles buffalo horns. Negeri Sembilan State Museum, Negeri Sembilan Craft Complex and Minangkabau House showcase the history and culture of the place.
Seremban is located about 60 km south of Kuala Lumpur and is easily accessible via highways including North-South Expressway, Kajang-Seremban Highway and Seremban-Port Dickson Highway.
The Kuala Lumpur International Airport about 45 minutes’ drive away, while the KTM ETS train services enhances accessibility of the city though public transport.
