Overview
Kampung Datuk Keramat is a large zone in the Titiwangsa constituency, falling within the boundary of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is located north east of downtown Kuala Lumpur and borders the district of Ampang in Selangor and is surrounded by Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ampang and Jalan Jelatek and next to Taman U-Thant. The term "Datuk Keramat” or Dato' Keramat" is often linked to a religious belief that is a blend of pre-lslamic animistic belief, Sufi saint worship and Chinese folk religion. "Keramat" means blessing, sacred or holy.
Property Development
This area, a local Malay reserve area, started off as a low-cost settlement with many single storey houses and flats, to complement the nearby Kampung Baru. It has now expanded into Taman Keramat, across Jalan Jelatek and the whole area is now known as Keramat.
Accessibility and Transportation
This area is served by 3 LRT stations - Jelatek, Dato’ Keramat and Damai, which gives an indication of its population size and their dependence on public transport.
Amenities and Facilities
Keramat is well known for its cheap local delicacies. From Kelantanese delights to Indonesian favourite cuisine and even some Arab restaurants surprisingly that are located here too. Some famous delicacies are the Roti John Titiwangsa (it was relocated from the Titiwangsa area)- the speciality being Roti John tuna and cheese, Satay Zaimah Ismail - a satay stall run by 2 generations based on a secret recipe, and Wan Chapati - its owner of Indian origins and famous for chappati and dhal. During the holy month of Ramadhan, their Ramadhan bazaar is infamous amongst customers from near and far. Given its slightly ghetto feel, most of the eateries will not withstand the tests of today’s hygiene standards as most are located near large monsoon drains.
The closest medical centre is the Institute Jantung Negara (IJN) and Kuala Lumpur General Hospital.
Property Types
Keramat has retained its ‘Malay village’ feel and most houses has been around for decades - with many wooden houses and majority of the houses are handed down from previous generations. There are only 3 high rise residential properties in this area that is The Palladium, Gurney Heights and Lanai Gurney. This is changing as some new developments are slowly changing the landscape of the area such as the Chymes Gurney, on Jalan Gurney off Jalan Dato Keramat with 255 units over 2 15-storey freehold condominium blocks, and 51 Gurney, an upmarket condominium facing the iconic Petronas KLCC Twin Towers with a car port in the sky.
