Overview
Ampang Jaya, more commonly known as Ampang, was one of the earliest areas in the Klang Valley to be opened for tin mining, in the 1850’s. The name "Ampang" means "dam" in Malay and the place was named in reference to the miners' dams. Ampang and tin mining were instrumental in the early development of Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas.
Ampang belongs to two states, demarked clearly owing to the dissection by the Middle Ring Road II (MRR2) where the west portion belongs to Kuala Lumpur and the east belongs to Selangor.
The two demarked Ampangs are unique and each paint a different picture, both in terms of atmosphere and purpose. Ampang, Kuala Lumpur is a modern, vibrant commercial area with high-end, high-rise residential addresses. It’s also known as a diplomatic hub, having a number of high commissions and embassies. Ampang, Selangor is a housing hub with low-cost to high-cost housing.
Ampang, Selangor is the home to the National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara) and the Taman Rimba Ampang (Ampang Recreational Forest) -- a small recreational park offering a retreat from the busy city life with its quiet environment and the river's cool and clear waters. Istana Daerah Hulu Langat is a palace in Ampang, the official residence of the Yang-Amat Berbahagia Tengku Mahkota of Hulu Langat, a member of the Selangor royal family. The palace is not normally open to the public, although the beautiful gardens around it can be viewed from outside.
